What are the best gift exchange games for a group?
The best gift exchange games let chance decide who goes home with which wrapped gift: a dice game where each roll says swap or pass, swap cards that players draw and read aloud, or a read-aloud story that sends the gifts around the circle at every direction word. In all three, everyone ends holding one gift.

A gift exchange is the part of the Christmas party people remember, as long as the rules are clear and nobody goes home with the gift they brought. A good game decides who gets which gift by chance, keeps the room laughing and ends with everyone holding something. Here are three ways to do it, with rules for each.
Three gift exchange games at a glance
| Game | Players | Time | Gifts taken from others? | You need |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gift Exchange Dice Game | 4 or more; a circle per table for 20 to 60 | 20 to 30 minutes, opening included | Swaps only; a gift taken twice is frozen | One die, a timer, the roll charts |
| Christmas Gift Swap Cards | 4 to 40 | About 20 to 25 minutes | Classic and Jolly Family decks trade; the Gentle deck never takes | The cards, cut apart |
| Christmas Pass the Gift Story | 6 to 14 in a circle, plus a reader | 2 to 5 minutes a story | No; the whole circle passes together | One story page, nothing to cut |
Every guest brings one wrapped gift. Name a price limit on the invitation so the gifts are roughly equal, and keep a spare or two for guests who forget.
How to play the gift exchange dice game
Each player’s roll says what happens next, so nobody has to choose a gift in front of everyone. The Gift Exchange Dice Game plays in two rounds:
- Collect the gifts at the door, mix them up and hand one to each player, so nobody starts with their own. Sit in a circle.
- Round 1, the Mystery Round. Start the timer. Roll, do what the roll chart says, and pass the die to the left. Gifts stay wrapped: shake them, weigh them, guess.
- When the timer rings, finish the lap, so everyone has had the same number of turns. Holding the gift you brought? Swap it to the left.
- The Big Reveal. One at a time, each player guesses, then opens.
- Round 2, the Swap Round. Timer again. When SWAP WITH ANYONE takes a gift, tick its Freeze Tag. Two ticks and the gift is frozen: it stays where it is to the end.
- When the timer rings, finish the lap. The gift in your hands is yours to keep.
There are four roll charts (Mystery, Swap, Gentle and Jolly rounds) and 11 action signs for a loud room. Every move is a swap between two players or a pass of the whole circle, so each person always holds exactly one gift. No die? The file has number cards to draw instead.
How the gift swap cards work
In Christmas Gift Swap Cards, players take turns drawing a card and reading it aloud. One of the cards says simply “Trade for any gift you like, or keep yours.” There are 118 action cards in three decks, and you pick the deck that fits your group:
- Classic, for offices and adult parties: wrapped gifts, a few surprises, then a Reveal round with the gifts open, which can still be traded. About 20 minutes for 4 to 25 players and 25 minutes for 40.
- Jolly Family, for mixed ages: gifts stay wrapped, most cards add a silly moment (“Swap with anyone whose gift has a bow”), and everyone opens together at the end.
- Gentle, for senior living and senior centers: the host draws and reads every card, the whole circle moves together, and nobody grabs or picks a gift.
In the Classic deck a Safe card protects your gift until your next turn, and in the Classic and Jolly Family decks the same two players never trade on back-to-back turns. Before anyone opens, a player still holding the gift they brought trades it to the left.
How a pass-the-gift story works
This is the quickest gift exchange of the three, and the one that makes the room laugh. Everyone sits in a circle holding a wrapped gift, and a reader who doesn’t play reads a rhyming story aloud. Every time the reader says LEFT, each gift moves one seat to the left; at the word RIGHT, one seat to the right; at ACROSS, to the person directly opposite. Every bold capital word counts, even when a character changes her mind.
Christmas Pass the Gift has four stories, and each page states its passes and its reading time:
| Story | Passes | About | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Classic | 20 | 4 to 5 minutes | Families and offices |
| Short & Sweet | 9 | 2 to 3 minutes | Children and seated groups |
| A Church Christmas | 13 | 3 to 4 minutes | Church groups |
| Across the Circle | 14 | 3 to 4 minutes | Mixed ages and families |
Each story was checked for circles of 6 to 14: every gift travels and ends at least two seats from where it started. For guests who find lifting hard, Table Slide lets the gifts slide along the table instead.
A gift exchange without taking gifts
Some groups love the drama of a swap; others would rather nobody lose a gift they like. You can choose:
- The passing story moves every gift at once, so no one takes from anyone.
- The Gentle deck of the swap cards: the host reads, the circle moves together, and nobody picks.
- The dice game’s Gentle Round: the host rolls for the group, and nobody grabs or picks a gift.
How long for 10 people, or for 40
For 7 to 10 players, the dice game runs a 4-minute first round and a 6-minute second round, then the opening. For 40 people, the swap cards’ Classic deck takes about 25 minutes, Reveal round included, or play the dice game with a circle of 8 to 10 at every table and one timer for the room. A passing story takes under five minutes; with more than 14 people, make two circles, each with its own reader.
Which game for which party
- Office party: the Classic swap cards with the Reveal round, or the dice game. Set a price limit on the invitation.
- Family Christmas: the dice game, since children love the dice, or the Jolly Family deck, then a passing story with the stocking stuffers.
- Senior living and senior centers: the Gentle deck or the Short & Sweet story, with staff handing out the gifts.
- Church group: the dice game, or the swap cards with the Jolly Family deck. Our guide to church Christmas party games closes the evening with the Church Christmas story.
The Christmas Gift Exchange Games Bundle puts all three games in one download, and the Office Christmas Party Games bundle pairs the swap cards with three other office party games. Black ink is all any of them needs. For the rest of the party, see our Christmas party games.
