What games work at an 80th birthday party?

The games that work at an 80th birthday party are played sitting down, take about 20 minutes each and are about 1946, the year the guest of honor was born: trivia with three choices, Which Came First answered with A and B paddles, and old sayings the whole room finishes together. For a 90th, keep the same order and play 1936 instead.

An 80th birthday party is usually a family party with a wide spread of ages: the guest of honor and old friends, children in their fifties, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The games that work for all of them are short, played sitting down, and built on 1946, the year the guest of honor was born. Here’s what to play, a party plan, and what to change if the birthday is a 90th.

1946 trivia questions and answers

These six come from our 1946 Trivia: Turning 80, from all four of its rounds, copied exactly as the Host Pack prints them, answers included.

Who starred opposite Lauren Bacall in ‘The Big Sleep’ (1946)? A. Humphrey Bogart · B. Clark Gable · C. Spencer Tracy (Answer: A, Humphrey Bogart.)

Who played Annie Oakley when ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ opened on Broadway in 1946? A. Mary Martin · B. Ethel Merman · C. Carol Channing (Answer: B, Ethel Merman.)

RCA’s 630-TS television set, launched in late 1946, had what screen size? A. 25 inches · B. 10 inches · C. 3 inches (Answer: B, 10 inches.)

Which doctor wrote the 1946 bestseller on baby and child care? A. Dr. Seuss · B. Dr. Joyce Brothers · C. Dr. Benjamin Spock (Answer: C, Dr. Benjamin Spock.)

Which food was the only item still rationed in the U.S. in 1946? A. Coffee · B. Butter · C. Sugar (Answer: C, Sugar.)

Babies born in 1946 are widely counted as the first of which generation? A. Greatest Generation · B. Generation X · C. Baby Boomers (Answer: C, Baby Boomers.)

The rounds are Music & Movies, Radio & Early TV, News & Firsts, and Everyday Life & Prices. After every answer the Host Pack has a fun fact and a question for the table; after the Annie Oakley question it is “Which show tune do you know by heart?” Eight more 1946 questions are on our page of 80th birthday games for someone born in 1946.

An 80th birthday party plan, all seated

Our 80th Birthday Games Bundle has three games, 1946 Trivia, Which Came First and Old Fashioned Sayings, and a ready birthday afternoon in its Start Here guide:

When Game About
Before the cake 1946 Trivia, rounds 1 and 2: the news, the songs and what things cost 15 minutes
While the tea goes round Which Came First, A or B, with a story prompt after every answer 25 minutes
After the cake Old Fashioned Sayings: the guest of honor finishes them first 20 minutes
If the room wants more 1946 Trivia, rounds 3 and 4, and the champion’s certificate 15 minutes

Nothing in it asks anyone to stand up, walk or cut anything out. Every game can be read aloud from its Host Pack, and the slide decks put each question on a television.

Keep every game short

At an 80th, shorter is kinder. Keep each game to about 20 minutes and stop while the room still wants more.

  • The Gentle 20. The trivia’s 20 friendliest questions make a relaxed game of about 20 minutes. The full game, all four rounds, takes about an hour.
  • Easy Mode. In Which Came First, each player holds up an A or B paddle. There are no answer sheets and no scores, and you read the answer straight away.
  • Stories over points. The Host Pack’s birthday bonus lets the guest of honor “phone a friend” once per round, and it says plainly that stories count more than points.

When the great-grandchildren come

Mix the generations into teams. The Host Pack suggests one of the oldest guests on each team and the youngest player reading the answers aloud. Younger guests can turn each “Talk about it” into a question for the Birthday Star, so a child asks great-grandpa: “Did you ever go to a big-league ballgame? Who did you see play?”

The bundle’s guide puts it well for family parties: “the grandchildren will lose the trivia and win the sayings.” Which Came First is the fair game in the middle. Every pair is at least 15 years apart, so the youngest can guess well and the oldest may simply remember.

Large print and clear sound

  • Print size. The 1946 trivia cards print at 40 pt or larger, the Which Came First display cards at 60 pt and up, and each saying at 76 pt or larger. Body text is 18 pt.
  • Speaking. Read every question twice. The Old Fashioned Sayings host page says it best: “Speak slowly, a little lower, not louder.”
  • Seating. Seat anyone who hears or sees less right beside the host or the screen, with no bright window behind you.
  • A screen. Every game has TV slides, so the question is on the wall as well as in your voice.

Something to keep: Then & Now

The 1946 game file includes a Then & Now keepsake to hand out after the game, with eight everyday prices from 1946 beside today’s U.S. averages, such as:

1946 Today
First-class stamp 3¢ 82¢
Minimum wage, one hour 40¢ $7.25
Gallon of gas about 21¢ over $4
Coffee, one pound about 34¢ about $9.30

Give it to the guest of honor with the Birthday Star certificate, which reads “Officially Vintage since 1946”.

Planning a 90th birthday instead

For someone born in 1936, the plan stays the same and the year changes. Our 1936 Trivia: Turning 90 has 40 questions in four rounds: Music & Movies, Radio Days, News & Firsts, and Everyday Life & Prices. Two of them, exactly as written:

Fred Astaire sang ‘The Way You Look Tonight’ in which 1936 film? A. Top Hat · B. Swing Time · C. Holiday Inn (Answer: B, Swing Time.)

In August 1936, whose carved face was dedicated on Mount Rushmore? A. Abraham Lincoln · B. Thomas Jefferson · C. Theodore Roosevelt (Answer: B, Thomas Jefferson.)

What to change for a 90th:

  • Put the oldest guests in charge. The 1936 game spreads them across the teams, one per team, so every table has someone who knows swing music and radio nights first-hand.
  • Shorten it. Play the Gentle 20 instead of full rounds, and let the conversation take the rest of the time.
  • Keep it small if you like. For a quiet gathering at home, read everything from the Host Packs; two people are enough.

The 90th Birthday Games Bundle plans the afternoon around the cake, just like the 80th: trivia before it, Which Came First with the tea, sayings after it. Its Birthday Star certificate calls 1936 “the year of radio nights, swing music and 3-cent stamps.” More 1936 questions are on our page of 90th birthday games for someone born in 1936.
