You need: a card and a pen for each guest

At the table

A cousin from the far branch needs initials for the square “has a family nickname”. Whoever signs it owes the table an answer, and the Host List has the question: “What is your nickname, and how did you get it?”

Why it works

The hosting tip that does the most is the smallest: pair the youngest and the oldest guest on one card with two pens. The squares send them across the picnic together, and the follow-up questions bring the stories back to the table. You can add your family’s own squares by hand; the file suggests “was at last year’s reunion”.
